Population Dynamics, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africa: Lessons from Kenya and Malawi
Hosted by: Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
Location: 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20004
Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Summary: A large share of the population of Africa is living in marginalized areas that are susceptible to climate variation and extreme weather events. Population growth is occurring most rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa, increasing vulnerability to the projected impacts of climate change. Incorporating population dynamics into climate change mitigation and adaptation in these areas can help organizations better understand and address these challenges, yet issues like access to family planning, reproductive health, and women's education and empowerment are rarely considered in climate change planning.

The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) recently conducted a study in collaboration with Population Action International to analyze the challenges and opportunities for incorporating population considerations into climate change and development interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. The results highlight policy and program implications in Kenya and Malawi and will help guide responses to climate change that include population dynamics and work towards sustainable development.

Speakers:
Eliya Msiyaphazi Zulu, African Institute for Development Policy
Clive Mutunga, Senior Research Associate, Population Action International
Abigail Jones, Director of Research and Policy, Climate Advisers

Lessons Learned from Iraq and How They Apply to North Africa
Hosted by: US Institute of Peace
Location: 2301 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, D.C.
Time: 10:00am - 11:30am
Summary: Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) Stuart Bowen on March 6 released SIGIR's final report for Congress, 'Learning From Iraq,' which details the accomplishments of the U.S. reconstruction efforts in Iraq. The report provides an 'instructive picture of what was the largest stabilization and reconstruction operation ever undertaken by the United States (until recently overtaken by Afghanistan).' Additionally, the report outlines seven lessons that the U.S. should implement to improve its approach to future stabilization and reconstruction operations.

The event will highlight SIGIR's experience in Iraq and examine the major problems it discovered, such as America's 'ad hoc' approach, the effectiveness of oversight, funding challenges, and the larger issue of nation-building. Experts will explore how lessons learned from Iraq can be applied to other American-led efforts, such as those associated with emerging democracies. Please join us on April 9, 2013 from 10:00am to 11:30M for what promises to be a relevant and timely discussion.

Advancing Women's Civil Society Organizations in Security Sector Reform
Hosted by: US Institute of Peace
Location: 2301 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, D.C.
Time: 9:30am - 12:00pm
Summary: Despite increasing recognition of the importance of women's participation in security sector reform (SSR), women in civil society remain sidelined in dialogues about security, and women's experiences continue to be overlooked. How can communities, especially women in civil society, be a part of making the security sector more effective and democratically accountable? Specifically, what role can women play in advancing a productive relationship between civil society and the security sector? What obstacles do they face and how can they be overcome?

The U.S. Institute of Peace's Center for Gender & Peacebuilding, in partnership with The Institute for Inclusive Security and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), will host an expert panel to discuss the relationship between women in civil society and the security sector. This discussion will occur in conjunction with the recent publication, 'A Women's Guide to Security Sector Reform,' co-authored by DCAF and The Institute for Inclusive Security. The panel will consider practical steps and tools that women in civil society can use to participate in dialogues on security, drawing on women's experiences in Afghanistan, Liberia, Libya, Serbia, Tunisia, and elsewhere.
