Mozambique: Deadlock Continues in Government-Renamo Dialogue

Maputo — Deadlock in the dialogue between the Mozambican government and the former rebel movement Renamo continued on Monday as the two delegations met for yet another session at Maputo's Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre. No agreement has proved possible on the terms of reference for international observers who should supervise a cessation of hostilities, because Renamo demands "parity" between itself and the ruling Frelimo Party in the armed forces (FADM) and the police.

South Sudan's rival leaders agree on 60 day ultimatum

June 10, 2014 (ADDIS ABABA) – South Sudanese president Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar on Tuesday agreed to end the ongoing conflict in the country and fully engage in the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD)-led peace process. In a communiqué, IGAD said both leaders had committed themselves to the formation of a transitional government of national unity within 60 days and ensure unhindered humanitarian support to affected people with immediate effect.

Mali: Rebels Agree to Talks

Three northern Malian rebel groups signed an accord in Algiers pledging to work for peace through inclusive talks in Mali, the Algerian government said in a statement on Tuesday. The three groups — the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, the High Council for the Unity of Azawad and the Arab Movement of Azawad — pledged their "good faith" to strengthen the reconciliation process.

If GM is the Answer, it is Only the Answer Partly, Sometimes, Maybe

In 2002, the international press was full of headlines such as 'Starving Zimbabwe Shuns GM Maize'. This was repeated again in 2010. The context was the refusal to import genetically-modified (GM) maize from South Africa as regulatory approval had not been granted and because there were fears that the food aid grain would be planted despite the fact that GM crops had not been approved for release by the national regulatory authorities.

Congo says army clashed with Rwandan troops after incursion

(Reuters) - Soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo exchanged fire on Wednesday with Rwandan troops who crossed the border and seized a Congolese soldier, a Congolese government spokesman said. "Elements from the Rwandan army crossed the border not far from Kibumba around 0330 this morning and took a Congolese corporal, which provoked a reaction from our soldiers there who opened fire," Lambert Mende told Reuters.
