Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Orders Full-Scale War on Terrorists

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday directed the security forces to launch a full-scale military operation to put an end to the impunity of terrorists in the country. Jonathan said that Nigeria's unity and stability as well as the protection of lives and property were non-negotiable. He restated the determination of his administration to protect the nation's democracy, national unity and political stability, by waging a total war against terrorism. Jonathan expressed optimism that the nation would overcome its challenges and Nigeria would take her rightful place in the world

Central African Republic City Tense after Church Attack

BANGUI, Central African Republic — Tensions are rising in the capital of Central African Republic a day after Muslim rebels attacked Christians sheltering at a Catholic church. The Wednesday attack left scores dead and prompted fears of reprisal attacks. Residents say youth later destroyed a mosque in the neighborhood of Lakouanga in retaliation. Thousands of people also marched in another part of Bangui, shouting slogans against the peacekeeping forces they say have failed to protect them.

With the World Cup fast approaching, Guardian Sport has assembled a team of experts to whittle down the top 100 World Cup football players of all time. The list, topped by Pele, represents footballing nations from across the world, but only three players from the African continent are listed. Hunger, Fear, and Defiance: The Cost of South Africa's Protracted Miner's Strike

On the dusty plains north of Johannesburg, a grueling battle is taking place in the world's biggest platinum mining community, as the longest, most destructive strike in South African history enters its fifth month. "We just want it to end. We go to school hungry. It's hard to concentrate," said 18-year-old Thabiso, surrounded by five friends, who all nodded vigorously in agreement as they walked home from school past the grey buildings of the now-silent Marikana mine - notorious as the place where police shot dead 34 striking miners in 2012.
