What's the Economic Value of a Life? Early Behavior-Based Estimates from Africa

Summary: Gianmarco León will present his new paper, co-authored with Ted Miguel, in which they exploit an unusual transportation setting to estimate the value of a statistical life (VSL). They use the case of Sierra Leone, where the international airport is separated from the capital Freetown. They estimate the trade-offs individuals are willing to make between mortal risk and cost as they travel to and from the international airport in Sierra Leone by choosing from among multiple transportation options – namely, ferry, helicopter, hovercraft, and water taxi.

Live Webcast: The State of the Kenyan Economy - Current Trends and Future Prospects

Summary: The Africa Growth Initiative (AGI) at Brookings and The Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) will host a live webcast discussion on Kenya's economy. The discussion will feature researchers from the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) and serve as the U.S. release of the 2013 Kenya Economic Report, an annual study from KIPPRA on Kenya's economic performance and future growth prospects. KIPPRA Executive Director John Omiti will give a short presentation on the report, followed by a panel discussion with CCA President and CEO Stephen Hayes and Joseph Kieyah from KIPPRA.
