Resilience: Learning from Practice Across the Development Spectrum
Hosted by: Center for Strategic and International Studies
Location: Ground Floor Conference Room
1616 Rhode Island Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20036
Time: 10:00am - 11:30am
Summary: Resilience is more than disaster recovery and preparedness. True resilience enables vulnerable communities and governments to become more adaptable in the face of diverse sources of stress and crisis. Effective programming for long-term resilience bridges the divide between relief and development in a way that calls for an integrated approach. Join us for a panel discussion with development practitioners and U.S. government representatives on ways to effectively embed resilience in the development agenda.

Keynote Remarks:
Amb. Jaliya Wickramasuriya Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the United States Framing Remarks:
Maria Otero Former Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Development and Human Rights, U.S. Department of State

Panel Discussion:
Nancy Lindborg Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance, U.S. Agency for International Development
Amb. William Garvelink Former U.S. Ambassador to Congo and Senior Advisor at CSIS
Andrew Watson Managing Director, Environment and Health, Development Alternatives Incorporated

Healthier by Precommitment: A Behavioral Economics Experiment in South Africa
Hosted by: Center for Global Development
Location: 5th floor, 2055 L St NW
Washington, DC 20036
Summary: In this seminar, Janet Schwartz will discuss a voluntary self-control commitment device aimed to help individuals make healthy food decisions in South Africa. Participants, who were enrolled in a large-scale incentive program that discounts the price of eligible groceries, were offered the chance to put their discount on the line. Agreeing households pledged that they would increase their purchases of healthy food to receive their discount; otherwise, it was forfeited for that month. Study results suggest that consumers will seize opportunities to create restrictive choice environments for themselves despite some risk of financial loss.
