Strengthening Youth Participation in Nigeria
Hosted by: International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy
Location: National Endowment for Democracy
1025 F Street, N.W., Suite 800, Washington, D.C. 20004
Time: 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Summary: With nearly half Nigeria's population between the ages of 18 and 35, young people represent one of the country's most promising assets. Yet despite limited progress in strengthening youth engagement in recent years, young men and women continue to be left out of decision-making processes. The failure to draw this energetic and innovative sector into the work of democracy and development can have serious implications, as evidenced in Nigeria's northeast, Middle Belt, and Niger Delta, where armed insurgents recruit alienated youth, offering them a strong sense of purpose and financial compensation. In his presentation, Abdulrazaq Alkali will provide an overview of the state of youth activism in Nigeria today. He will survey the steps being taken to: engage youth; identify barriers to their participation; and increase their involvement in the decision-making process.

Dissertation Defense: Ashad Sentongo Re-imagining Decentralization: Improving of Relationships between Ethnic Groups and the State in Uganda
Hosted by: GMU School for Conflict Analysis & Resolution
Location: George Mason University, Arlington Campus
3351 Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA 22201
Foundation Building Main Conference Room 5183
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm
Summary: Decentralization of state power is often argued to be the appropriate power-sharing system of government in ethnically divided societies, whenever group grievances over exclusion or discrimination by the state culminate into violent conflicts… This study determined that decentralization improves relationships positively when it is perceived to function effectively to deliver services, including meeting cultural and identity interests of ethnic groups especially over power and resources… Decentralization can be re-imagined to maximize implementation, by depoliticizing the system, to provide a local governments mandate that is flexible enough to create opportunities that reduce the problem of dual authorities, and policy options that level-off disparities in power and control of resources between LGs and traditional authorities.

Author Event Bob Holman and Papa Susso
Hosted by: Busboys and Poets
Location: Busboys and Poets @ 14th and V, Langston Room
2021 14th Street, NW
Time: 9:00pm - 11:00pm
Summary: Busboys and Poets Books welcomes author, activist, poet Bob Holman to discuss and sign his latest work, Sing This One Back To Me, with a special performance from Bob and Papa Susso! An epilogue to Bob Holman's travels to West Africa to discover the roots of spoken word, hip-hop, and the oral tradition, this collection is a celebration of language and its power to make us see. Building on his transcription of the Griot poems sung to him by West African legend Papa Susso, Holman uses verse as another lens for experiencing visual art (Van Gogh's Violin) and as a vehicle for sharing his own intimate history. The landscape shifts, and grief makes itself evident, as do those very necessary, sneaky, ecstatic reminders of life's continuing possibility for joy. Free and open to all!

Promising Developments in Global Tuberculosis Control
Hosted by: Center for Strategic and International Studies
Location: The Center for Strategic and International Studies, 1800 K Street, NW
Time: 12:00pm – 1:30pm
Summary: For too long, the international community has pursued a 19th-century approach to treating a 21st-century disease: tuberculosis (TB). The rise in cases of drug-resistant TB and the millions of annual deaths from the disease have highlighted the necessity of strengthening the international community's response to TB. New scientific discoveries, diagnostic tools, technologies, and strategies for controlling the disease have recently emerged, all of which can be implemented in order to achieve progress in fighting domestic and global TB.

Please join Dr. Peter Small, Senior Program Officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for an interactive conversation about these promising developments in global TB prevention and control, including how they may improve U.S. global TB policies. Mr. Todd Summers, Senior Adviser with the CSIS Global Health Policy Center, will moderate the discussion.
