Summary: The recent developments and escalating violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo have emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to resolve conflict in the DRC. The Great Lakes Policy Forum will bring together a diverse set of U.S. and Congolese stakeholders to address the challenges facing the region. Please join us for a series of panel discussions of leading thinkers and fresh voices from US and Congolese civil society, government, and academia. The two-day forum will analyze conflict at the local, national, regional, and international level to better understand the varying situations and perspectives while suggesting constructive solutions to improve the well-being of Congolese citizens in the near and long-term.

Why Mali Matters: Economics, Energy, and Extremism in North Africa

Summary: In January 2013, North Africa took center stage as French military forces intervenedagainst Islamist extremists in Mali. Later in the month a BP gas facility in Algeria was the site of a deadly hostage crisis. In the aftermath of the hostage crisis U.S. President Barack Obama said his administration would work with other countries to "combat the scourge of terrorism in the region, which has claimed too many innocent lives. This attack is another reminder of the threat posed by al Qaeda and other violent extremist groups in North Africa." Join CNP President Scott Bates and an expert panel as they discuss economics, energy, extremism, conflict and the current security landscape in Mali and Algeria.

Addressing Human Rights and Governance in Congo: Civil Society Perspectives

Summary: Over the past few months, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has faced another destabilizing threat in the east.  While the most recent attacks have revived discussion on addressing the root causes of the larger Congo conflict that has led to over five million deaths, the views of informed Congolese have been underrepresented. This discussion will focus on the views of two Congolese civil society activists who work on human rights and security sector reform in Congo.  They will examine the current challenges to human rights and good governance in the DRC, their effect on instability in Congo, and options to address the eastern Congo crisis.
