The Africa Program Welcomes New Director, Dr. Monde Muyangwa

On March 20, 2014, the Africa Program at The Wilson Center was pleased to formally welcome Dr. Monde Muyangwa as its new Director. Dr. Muyangwa brings over 20 years of experience in Africa to the program.

When asked what she sees for the future of the Africa Program she said,

"I am delighted for the opportunity to be a part of the Wilson Center as the Director of the Africa Program. I am very fortunate that the late Congressman Howard Wolpe and Steve McDonald left such a strong legacy for the program. I look forward to building upon that legacy by focusing on key strategic issues of critical importance to Africa and to US-Africa relations; by consolidating and expanding our partnerships; and by conducting programs that continue to elevate the credentials and the impact of the Africa Program."

Before coming to the Wilson Center, Dr. Muyangwa was the Academic Dean at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies at National Defense University (NDU). For eleven years, she oversaw the Center's curriculum and programs in the areas of peace and security, governance, and development. Prior to that, she worked for the National Summit on Africa, an organization focused on strengthening US-Africa relations. Dr. Muyangwa's career also includes a wide range of community development projects in southern Africa relating to gender, education, housing, health, and nutrition. She has also co-authored, with Margaret Vogt, a publication for the International Peace Academy titled An Assessment of the Organization of African Unity's Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution.

She earned her Ph.D. in International Relations and a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford, and holds a BA in Public Administration and Economics from the University of Zambia. She was a Rhodes Scholar and a Wingate Scholar, as well as the Valedictory Speaker for her graduation class at the University of Zambia.
