Tuesday, July 29thGrowing the Development Dividend: A Conversation with U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman

Summary: On July 29, the Africa Growth Initiative at Brookings will host U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Michael Froman for a conversation about trade, development, and how U.S. trade policy, including the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), must adapt to shifts in the global economic landscape.  With economic development high on the agenda of the upcoming U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, Ambassador Froman will outline how the United States can chart a more comprehensive path toward broad-based, inclusive growth in the 21st Century. Ambassador Froman was sworn in as the 11th United States Trade Representative on June 21, 2013. He previously served at the White House as Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs and as the U.S. Sherpa for the G-20 and G-8 Summits. Kemal Derviş, vice president of the Global Economy and Development Program, will provide introductory remarks after which Ambassador Froman will make a keynote address. Brookings Senior Fellow Dr. Amadou Sy will then moderate a discussion and take audience questions.

The Value of Higher Education in Development: A Conversation with 2014 YALI Washington Fellows on Education & Youth Entrepreneurs

Summary: In June 2014, 500 young African leaders demonstrating exemplary entrepreneurial and civic leadership arrived in Washington D.C. to participate in the first ever Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Washington Fellowship, a six-week academic and training program that seeks to prepare the next generation of African leaders for the 21st century, which will culminate with a three-day Presidential Summit for Washington Fellows on July 28. Join us for a conversation on the educational and entrepreneurial opportunities and challenges facing African youth, the value of higher education in development, and the vital role that the private sector can play in investing and strengthening education in Africa.

Press Conference: Advocates Call for End of U.S. Support of African Tyrants

Summary: A diverse U.S. based activist coalition focusing on Africa is calling on U.S. leaders to cease their support and empowerment of brutal dictators across Africa. The Coalition will host a press conference ahead of the first ever U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit to take place in Washington, DC in early August.

Friday, August 1stNPC Luncheon with Denis Sassou-Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo

President of the Republic of Congo Denis Sassou-Nguesso will discuss peace, security and stability of the central Africa region and oil investments in his country at a National Press Club luncheon on Friday, August 1. Sassou-Nguesso, who met President Vladimir Putin in 2012, recently was quoted in a Nigerian newspaper as saying that Congo plans to attract Russian investment in oil industry, agriculture and education services. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $22 for Press Club members. NPC Members may purchase two tickets at this rate. Non-member tickets cost $36.
